A Typical Day On Our Detox Retreat in UK
The daily program of events is available for everyone to participate in, all week long, but only if you feel to.
You may prefer to lay in bed with a book or a movie, or hope between the pool and sauna.
This description is of a day when you feel enthused to join everything on the programme.
What we can expect of each other
While we use a top quality venue, we are not a spa holiday or a boot camp...
What we expect from you
- If issues arise, please bring them to our attention so we can deal with them swiftly and appropriately. We are with you 24/7 to help.
Find us either in the common room or staff cottage.
- We operate a ‘buddy system’, please listen out for other people in your cottage. Send someone to fetch us, if you’re unable to.
- Please be sensitive to other people’s experience. Bring your difficulties to us - other participants are on their own journey.
- Cherish the space - please return and wash your own juice glasses and tea cups.
- You are free at any time to schedule a one-to-one session with team members to discuss any aspect of your retreat.
Provision is made available during the week to do so.
What to expect from us
- Our role is to support you through your detox process. Staff are on site and available 24-7. We are all around in the communal area at around 9am. At other times you should find someone in the staff cottage, if there is anything you need help with - from a light bulb to a hug.
- We will have fresh juices ready for you 4 times a day, make sure there is a steady supply of teas, toilet rolls etc, provide tai-chi, meditation and yoga sessions, counselling sessions, nutritional talks, and food prep sessions.
- We check in with each person daily, and are available for emotional support at any time you need it.
- This is a serious detox reteat (not a spa or bootcamp!), offering you understanding about your relationship to food, each other, and your life's choices. Staff are all experts in their fields.
8 am to 9 am - Morning Exercises and Meditation
Daniel starts your day with some gentle, Pre Tai Chi exercises to lubricate the joints and give you sense of ease in your skin.
Meditation is that time and space devoted to becoming more aware of yourself in the present moment. The more we know about ourselves the more opportunity we have to live our lives in harmony with our deepest desires.
9 am to 10 am - Juice and Supplements
Four times each day we make fresh juice.
The more juice you consume, the more of the body's energy is spent digesting, so the juices are diluted with filtered water. Even so, consuming the least juice results in the best detox.
Psyllium powder or capsules, and detoxing herbs are also taken to make the whole experience more effective and manageable.
10 am to 12 noon - Colonic hydrotherapy
Twice-daily there is the opportunity for a simple colonic irrigation. They are a safe and gentle way to clear your colon of debris, and increase assimilative and eliminative powers.
Despite being a scary idea for most first-timers, everyone is surprised by just how easy it is to learn, and how deeply relaxing they can be.
However, if you want to fast without colonics, then that option is available too.
12 noon to 1 pm yoga - Dru Yoga Sessions
Be you a beginner or a practiced yogini, you will learn something new. Use the retreat time to stretch and release joints, learn to correct your posture and 'lengthen' your body, thus relieving much strain on tired joints. You can expect to increase your range of movement by the end of your retreat while revitalizing body and mind!
Though, as you can see, by the end of the retreat, things get very relaxed!
1 pm to 1.30 pm - Juice and Supplements
Your second juice of the day.
They will vary from apple, carrot, beetroot, celery and ginger, depending upon the flow of the week and the reactions of the group.
Half way through the week, there is the option of having a potassium-rich broth to keep your electrolytes in balance.
1.30pm to 3pm - Nutritious Talks
Dao has designed these extremely popular daily talks to be inspiring, empowering, and easy-to-grasp - giving you a practical understanding of why many of our food and lifestyle choices work against us instead of for us. Once you know your body's inner workings, it becomes obvious what fuel are required. This is not a nutritional course - it is far more useful !
Covering much more than just food, we will also attempt to clarify the difference between marketing spin and 'natural' products in order to make better educated choices on a variety of daily topics and the larger ecological environment.
3 pm to 5 pm - Free Time
This 2 hour block each afternoon is for you to be able to rest, sleep, use the sauna, swim, watch TV, do a jigsaw, chat, or walk without missing anything in the programme proper.
There is also a changing programme of activities that happen during this time which may include guided walks, craft sessions and themed workshops. Details of times and locations will be posted on the information board. Click here See the section below
5 pm to 6 pm - Juice and Supplements
Your third juice of the day.
You can have as many or few of these as you like through the day.
Essentially, having less juice means a deeper cleanse, but it is a harder path to tread.
The psyllium, etc., will fill your stomach so you're not hungry, and increases the productivity of the colonics.
6 pm to 8 pm - Colonic hydrotherapy
Your second colonic of the day.
Some chose to skip the ocassional colonic, if they are feeling to tired to perform it.
However, the colonic can often remove excess toxins from the bowel, so they don't migrate back into the blood, releaving feelings of sluggishness.
This clearing of the bowel works wonders but can also stir up additional material to be cleared, as well as evoking emotions to be integrated also.
7 pm to 9 pm - Movie Option
We have a large selection of movies that you are welcome to take back to your cottages to watch at any point, but in the evenings, we like to show a communal movie.
It is projected onto a screen, for the full cinematic experience.
The movies are hand-picked, thus lacking the food and violence of standard TV programming.
We like to show films that are uplifting, inspirational or thought-provoking.
8 pm to 9 pm - Deep Relaxation
As an alternative to the movie, some nights Nikki guides people through a deep relaxation.
Using pillows and blankets to support the body, either lying or sitting, we will use muscle tense and release, breath, and visualisation to help the body and mind let go of tension, and rest deeply. The perfect way to wind down before sleep.
So as well as getting more from the downtime of the retreat, you are also learning how to do so once back in the busyness of life.
9 pm to 10 pm - Juice and Supplements
Your final juice of the day, but many guests are asleep by this point in the evening. However, skipping this final juice is fine - in favour of a more indepth rest.
We are very keen to encourage people to rest as much as they need, to counter our generally busy lives. Despite the fasting, colonics, emotional counselling and nutritional coaching, we maintain that the greatest healing force in this retreat is just the downtime from all that busyness.
Sometime During the week
Later in the week, there will be opportunity to spend more time going much deeper with Daniel.
His work with Somatic Experiencing offers the space and time to understand where you are in your life, and what is keeping you from further fulfilment.
Then comes the possibility to embrace your integrity; live with greater authenticity, and to gain a true perspective on how to move into the future you want.
On the Monday of your retreat, Nikki brings out the craft supplies. This is both an opportunity to explore your creative side (often forgotten since school), and also a chance to take your mind of your belly.
More important than the creation itself, it is an chance for members of the group to get together and chat the hours away - getting to know each other better - and maybe produce a souvenir of your time, or a present for those looking after the dog at home.
You have a two-hour block each day with nothing scheduled into the programme.
Some use this time to socialise, swim, sleep, or watch movies, but there is also the oportunity to walk around the property and beyond.
Depending on the weather, Daniel will take a group out to one of the local beaches for a gentle stroll through North Devon's stunning coastline.
Stress Management Workshops
A couple of times in the week, in this two hour free time block, Daniel will offer an exploration of the triggers, the feeling and management of stress.
The obect of these workshops is to resource us to stay with ourselves in the inevitable stresses of a busy, daily life.
And of course, as often as you wish, there are endless treatment options. These are available throughout the week.
Some are used to speed the process of detox through the manipulation of the lymph system, take advantage of your relaxed state to smooth out your stressed muscles and aching limbs we accrue in life, or else, just to pamper yourself while you're away.
And on the final day
Raw Food Prep Classes
To help ground your body back into the process of eating and digesting, we reintroduce food on the penultimate day. Keeping to the theme of raw foods being the best, as discussed in the week's talks, Nikki runs two raw food prep sessions, in which you not only learn how to make wonderful, yummy, nutritious foods, but you are there making it yourself.
This process also helps to land you back into the world of food, when you are back at home, because you then have both the 'how' and the 'why' to follow this path of health.
